Arctic Monkeys: the AM Era

I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor was the song that started it all for me… Oh, What a Way to Begin it All.
My friend Hannah, from Cardiff, introduced me to the anthemic album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not back in age of Myspace (yes you read that right… That’s how long ago it’s been. Also a major thank you to my lovely friend Charlotte for reigniting my love, pre-AM).
WPSIATWIN brings back sentimental feelings of youthful days that were infused with drunken escapades for most, but saying Arctic Monkeys are only a nostalgia band… That’s Where You’re Wrong.

Arctic Monkeys are an enigma. Aside from the rare tweets/instagram posts of the agile beast Matt Helders, they don’t partake in social media. They stray away from the banality of public appearances but their lack of self promotion is quite refreshing, it keeps us interested and wanting more.
(Besides the fangirls/fanboys do all the work for them, they’re the best PR in the world!)
Before AM was even officially announced, it was a force to be reckoned with…
Anyone else remember back in September of 2012 when Blake from AMUS tweeted this revelation? Or when Jill Helders (who is only the coolest mum ever) had a twitter account and tweeted this….
And then also added “And now we start on 5th album titles!” which promptly led the speculation to trend on twitter with the hashtag #ArcticMonkeys5thAlbum in the U.K. Needless to say, we were on the edge of our seats highly anticipating the new album.

In true Arctic Monkeys fashion, AM is unlike any album they did before. The progression of their work has been incredible to witness, they haven’t forgotten how to captivate their audience with their exploration of sound, plus Alex Turner’s adroitly use of straightforward and relevant lyrics always keep us mesmerized. It just further proves their longevity. Any hardcore fan will tell you that Arctic Monkeys always maneuver in a strategic and onward way.
Do I Wanna Know? was the single that started it all (not discounting R U Mine? since it was a standalone single for RSD) and with that first riff, I was immediately hooked. With lyrics like ‘have you no idea that you’re in deep? I dreamt about you nearly every night this week, how many secrets can you keep? ‘Cause there’s this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow and I play it on repeat until I fall asleep’. DIWK? is the proverbial equivalence of ‘this could be us but you playin’ except in that classic Alex Turner eloquence.
If you’re not familiar with DIWK? here is a compilation of just some of the gigs GATRS went to throughout the AM 2013-2014 tour. Just hit play and let that chill inducing intro transport you as if you were there alongside us.

It’s now been a year since the era of AM started and I’m still very much hooked, the only difference is the days of intimate settings are no longer. Gone are the days of grimy clubs with sticky floors and dark concert halls, the venues are now bigger. The lights are more dazzling and bright. The screams are hell of a lot louder but despite their colossal success these four guys are just childhood friends, actually more like brothers, that don’t take themselves seriously (which is why you shouldn’t either). They just look like they’re having the time of their lives living their dreams.

Just some of the amazing AM gigs GATRS have been to between 2013-2014, still have more coming!

The most important thing to know about me is that I'm a melomaniac and shameless fangirl. I am addicted to concerts, they are my sanctuary and safe haven. When I'm on the front row on the barricade of a concert... I feel that I am truly home. I'm also a proud and happy vinyl crate-digger. Whether it's searching for vinyl at flea markets, garage sales, vintage shops... I am a sucker for the crackling of a good record when the needle drops on a turntable. I am a true Cancer with Moon in Cancer and ascending in Pisces. Also, loves dogs (especially my son Elvis) and quality food porn pictures. Social Media: @youthquakermimi
