Band Of The Week: The Franklys

It’s been since the days of Joan Jett and Pat Benatar  that I have really set down and listened to an all girl band, or just a female singer for that matter. I have tried, don’t get me wrong, but nothing really hit me , until now.

A friend of mine told me about The Franklys. A friend who I often turn to for new music recommendations, one who’s opinion I trust ( he is a bit like me when it comes to music ). Even at that point, I hesitated on listening to them. Then I was sent their upcoming debut album, I listened, and I knew I should have trusted his judgement.

The Franklys are an all girl band, two from Sweden, and two from the UK:

Jennifer Ahlkvist- guitar/vocals
Fanny Broberg-guitar/backing vocals
Zoe Biggs- bass
Lexi Clark-drums
Their debut album, Are You Listening, will be released toward the end of June, and let me tell you, you SHOULD be listening when it comes out.
Their music will grab your attention from the very first chord. Hard banging brilliant garage rock with a dash of punk sprinkled in. Jen Ahlqvist’s vocals are raw and rebellious, with an attitude that harkens back to The Runaways. The instrumentation from the Zoe Biggs’s bass. Fanny Broberg’s lead guitar,  and Lexi Clark’s drums is masterful and finely-calibrated.
Have a listen to their latest single, Weasel,  taken from their upcoming album and let it rock the gym socks off of you! :

You can usually find me traveling, queuing, or at barricade for a band. I am most likely doing all three things in a day. If I'm not at a concert you can also find me digging through crates for that coveted black disc, I'm an avid vinyl lover and I have the receipts to prove it.
