5 Best of… Snow Patrol

A little something to tide us over while we await their next album!

Snow Patrol is working on their seventh studio album!  The band attended (and was honored at) this year’s Oscar Wilde party in LA last month.  In an interview with Ali Ryan of, singer Gary Lightbody said that they are recording most of the new album here (in LA).  Guitarist Nathan Connolly added that they are “about halfway through it and [should] finish in the next few months.  There should be a new Snow Patrol record at the end of this year, start of next.”

The Northern Irish band is so much more than their celebrated songs “Chasing Cars” and “Run.”   Their lyrics resonant deeply, especially when performed by Gary and his achingly beautiful voice.  While most of their music is about lost love and sadness, there are some happy ones too.

To help tide over eager fans, I’ve compiled a list of tracks worthy of another listen:

Song:     This Isn’t Everything You Are

Album:  Fallen Empire

Year:     2011

Why:     It reminds us that we are so much more than a painful moment in time.

“And in one little moment
It all implodes
This isn’t everything you are
Breathe deeply in the silence

No sudden moves
This isn’t everything you are
Just take the hand that’s offered
And hold on tight
This isn’t everything you are
There’s joy not far from here,
I know there is
This isn’t everything you are”

Song:     Give Me Strength

Album:  Up To Now

Year:     2009

Why:     Giving thanks to those who help us in our hard times.  We can’t go through this life alone.

“You give the strength to me, a strength I never had, I was a mess you see,
I’d lost the plot so bad, you dragged me up and out,
out of the darkest place, there’s not a single doubt when I can see your faces.”

Song:     New York

Album:  Fallen Empire

Year:     2011

Why:     Haunting sadness of a long distance relationship.  With lyrics like “if the curve of you was curved on me…”  Sigh.  Enough said.

If you were here beside me instead of in New York

If the curve of you was curved on me

I’d tell you that I loved you before I ever knew you

‘Cause I loved the simple thought of you”

Song:     Crack the Shutters

Album:  A Hundred Million Suns

Year:     2008

Why:     Waking up in the morning with your love… what could be better?

“You cool your bed-warm hands down
On the broken radiator
When you lay them freezing on me
I mumble can you wake me later
But I don’t really want you to stop
And you know it so it doesn’t stop you”

Song:     Dark Roman Wine

Album:  Up To Now

Year:     2009

Why: Such a simple, romantic song.  Listen to the Royal Albert Hall version if you want goosebumps.

“I will hang on the hook of your splendor
As the night rolls us up in its arms
And the square of your thumbs and your fingers
Is the blanket of the sky that’s so warm”

The boys have been busy, but are back in the studio.  If you are looking for some other tunes to keep you occupied, check out Nathan Connolly’s hard rock band Little Matador, as well as Gary Lightbody’s Americana supergroup, Tired Pony, comprised of  Gary LightbodyRichard ColburnIain ArcherJacknife LeePeter Buck,Scott McCaughey and Troy Stewart.   Good stuff!!
