Here at The Girls at the Rock Show, we’re all about showcasing promising rising bands and four-piece band Calpurnia are just that.
The group formed when Finn Wolfhard, of Stranger Things and It, met future drummer Malcolm Craig on the set of a video music shoot. The shoot happens to be for labelmate and fellow Canadian PUP’s GUILT TRIP in 2013 (Finn Wolfhard also starred in PUP’ Sleep In The Heat in 2016).
Speaking to Now Toronto, Wolfhard discusses how PUP inspired him stating, “If I hadn’t done the PUP video, I probably wouldn’t be playing music right now. PUP is probably the most influential band in the last 10 years of my life – them and the Beatles.
That inspiration has been converted into a band named Calpurnia and they’ve been making the rounds with performances and been covering many artists like Weezer, New Order, and Mac DeMarco (that you can watch below). The band have also just signed with Royal Mountain Records (home to releases by Alvvays, Mac DeMarco, and more).
In a statement, Wolfhard says “it is so sweet that we have such a good team at Royal Mountain Records, I love everyone on it. I’m extremely excited to record our EP with Cadien Lake James. Not only is he is one of my favorite bands of all time and recorded some of my favorite songs, but he is also the sweetest guy ever. Thanks, everyone so much who helped us out along the way, it means the world. <3”
