In a post-Tame Impala world, there have been plenty of psych-rock bands but there not many that have that certain… Something.
London-based band Dead Coast are that band that have it, that mystical spark that just captivates you, it has a lot to do with the fact that Dead Coast are not one-dimensional. They’re infused with blues and coastal surf interplay. There’s nothing basic or generic with them and that makes them all the more compelling.
Dead Coast are Luca Bianco (guitar/flute/theremin/vox), Craig ‘Juno’ Leadbeater (bass/backing vox), Jonny Turner (guitar/keys), and Mari Mardou (drums). The band released their debut album Shambolic via Italian label Annibale Records in 2016, releasing the singles Hills Made of Sand, Jenny Loves the Sun, and ESP. The LP was recorded by Syd Kemp (Aquaserge/Neal’s Children) at the legendary R.I.P Studios in Primrose Hill, London and was produced by Syd & the band. Dead Coast are signed to Greenway Records in New York.
I was fortunate enough to see them twice during their SXSW debut, it was intoxicating to see them perform, each member bringing their own dynamic to the group. It’s no wonder that they caught people’s attention. Dead Coast are the musical equivalent of escapism, their music transports you to those warm summer days and gives you cosmic vibes. I was immediately hooked.
2017 is treating Dead Coast well, once again the band teamed up with Syd Kemp on recording/production duties and released via Greenway Records. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Dead Coast, we’ll make sure to keep our eyes on them.
