Never did I imagine that Rihanna would cover one of my favorite Tame Impala songs from their latest LP, Currents, and I certainly never thought she’d release it on her highly anticipated eighth studio album but the world is a strange place.
New Person, Same Old Mistakes is Tame Impala’s closing song on Currents and it a cover of it has found its way to being the ninth track on Rihanna’s much buzzed about (and finally dropped) album, ANTI. The song was renamed to Same Ol’ Mistakes and although it was definitely an unexpected direction, the song works so well. Currents is a relatable collection of tracks while still maintaining that Kevin Parker tapestry of sounds and experimentation. It’s a more pop direction but still keeps true to the psychedelia we love so much. Rihanna’s cover stays true to the original while making it all her own without distorting it. Same Ol’ Mistakes is a slow simmering but still R&B version with ethereal harmonies that are the perfect counterpart to Kevin Parker’s vocals. (In fact, we’d LOVE to hear a mash-up of the two tracks.. SOMEONE MAKE IT HAPPEN.)
