After releasing Evol in 1986, Sonic Youth worked on the score for Ken Friedman’s 1987 film Made In U.S.A., which was eventually released as a soundtrack album in 1995. Before the score was finalized, the band recorded several rehearsal sessions of music that didn’t end up in the film. Those sessions are now finally being released this June as Spinhead Sessions, named after the studio where they were recorded (as reported by Brooklyn Vegan).
The album is entirely instrumental, described by Thurston Moore as “spindly, twisting rhythms and quiet rushes of noise and melody.” We can hear one of those spindly and twisting tracks, Theme With Noise, below.
1. Ambient Guitar & Dreamy Theme
2. Theme With Noise
3. High Mesa
4. Unknown Theme
7. Theme 1 Take 4
