Arkells brought their latest tour to Atlanta last night, and what a night it was. Front man Max Kerman told the crowd “this wasn’t a Wednesday night. It’s a FRIDAY night! You have nothing to do tomorrow!” It’s kind of hard not to do as he says given his contagious energy and substantial fan base. Arkells are a Canadian band, out of Hamilton, Ontario. Their debut album, Jackson Square, came out in 2008, and they’ve since released another three albums, Michigan Left (2011), High Noon (2014), and Morning Report (2016). Their most recent release, Knocking at the Door, came out earlier this year.
I’m always looking to support and check out Canadian bands. Although I’ve been in Atlanta for 30+ years, I grew up just outside Toronto, and like the Arkells, my parents are both McMaster graduates. I first saw the band when they opened for Frank Turner in Athens, GA last year. As colleague Tara mentioned in her review, Frank has the best opening bands, hands down. Don’t be mistaken, Arkells have earned their place in the spotlight, having won 4 Juno Awards (Canada ’s music recording industry awards). It was good to see them headline a show, and they owned it. Opening with Amazing Grace and mixing in some Great Balls of Fire, and even a Tom Petty tribute. What more could you want?!
If you haven’t had the chance to check them out, do so. Now. Right now! You won’t regret it!
