Samantha Urbani is the former leader of the New York band Friends, she’s also brilliantly collaborated with boyfriend Blood Orange (Dev Hynes) on mesmerizing tracks like Friends song The Way (Blood Orange Mix), You’re Not Good Enough, No Right Thing, It Is What It Is, Chosen, Always Let U Down, On The Line, and Time Will Tell (Blood Orange tracks). Can’t forget their rich and silky cover of Hurt U by Babyface and Toni Braxton.
Working on her own music, 1 2 3 4 was posted to Soundcloud and is her first official solo song. It’s an addicting and infectious tune of with plenty of funky beats. Samantha’s smoky but dulcet alto vocals are spot on. One word to describe her voice: lush.
1 2 3 4 sounds like a blast from the past, reminiscent of early Madonna, straight out of the ’80s and I can’t get enough of the track. I’ve probably listened to it a good 20 times already.
Samantha wrote and co-produced the song, playing most of the instruments herself, and Dev Hynes contributed the piano and horn arrangement. We can thank Matthew Molnar for the incredible bass.
