We all know that The Wizard of Oz is perfectly paired with Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon but now thanks to some brilliant Reddit users, we can add another movie to the mix, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Apparently, a number of lyrics from the album seem to match events the on-screen (especially if you happen to be in a certain state of mind while you’re doing all this (nine days away from the 20th.. Coincidence..?).
Thanks to Reddit, make sure to play the album when the text vanishes from the screen, leave it on repeat (3 times are needed) and pressing play as the film’s opening scroll ends and the camera pans to the spaceship starts a synchronization that almost lines up perfectly with each act in the movie…
SPOILER ALERT.. SCROLL AHEAD IF YOU’VE NOT WATCHED THE MOVIE YET
My favorite lyric+scene syncs (cronological)
i’m not afraid of dying. anytime will do.
This is said on the album right after poe wakes up on the torture chamber and stares at kylo (Torry starts her screams at the same time poe screams in the movie)
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town, waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
All the lyrics of “Time” happens while the movie shows rey’s daily struggles. The whole scene just fits with the song
And after all, we’re only ordinary men
This is sung at the same time that rey tells finn that she had never seen anyone from the resistance, and he says “This is what we look like. Some of us, others look different”
to hear the softly spoken magic spells
Cut to kylo talking to vader’s helmet, trasitioning into the sad piano of The Great Gig in the Sky
keep your hands of my stack
Rey gets the saber from Maz’s chest
god only knows, it’s not what we would choose to do
This one really got me. It is sung while the scene focuses on kylo looking around the battlefield on Maz’s planet
Focus on Finn receiving the lightsaber from Maz
(…) and blue
Finn ignites the blue lightsaber. No, i’m not kidding about this one. This is where i knew it would be impossible for this to be a coincidence
and i’ve got things on my mind
Kylo telling rey that she has the map on her mind, and he will get it
i’ve been mad for fucking years, absolutely years I know i’ve been mad, i’ve always been mad
Kylo trying to get into rey’s mind (the music in this part is very interesting, as it starts growing when she says “you’re afraid”, then she wait some seconds, and says “that you’ll never be as strong as vader” at the exact same moment as “Breathe” starts)
Live for today, gone tomorrow. That’s me.
The camera focus on Han during this whole phrase
Home, Home again
I like to be here when i can
Rey meets with Finn, Han and Chewie again
I’m not afraid of dying. Anytime will do
Again, focus on Han
if you can hear this wispering, you’re dying
Get away. I’m alright, Jack, keep your hands of my stack. Money, it’s a hit. Don’t give me that do goody-good bulshit. I’m in a high fidelity first class travelling set, I think i’ll buy me a lear jet
During the “keep your hands off my stack”, han grabs kylo’s saber. He gets stabbed right at the end of the “Don’t give me that do goody-good bullshit”.
The fight between kylo and rey had some interesting lyrics during it.
Black and blue
Who knows wich is wich and who is who?
Rey is acting too much like kylo/the dark side?
up and down, and, in the end, it’s only round and round
As kylo holds rey’s saber up, and rey holds kylo’s saber down. “It’s only round and round”, meaning that they’re basically the same, or that this fight between them will lead to nothing?
haven’t you heard? It’s a battle of words
something something dark side persuasion
And now for the last scene of the movie. If you wondered why it seems that it moves kinda slowly, here’s why
The lunatic is on the grass
remembering games, and daisy chains and laughs
got to keep the loonies on the path
As rey makes her way through the island
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon
This is during luke’s reveal.
And my favorite one, the lyrics at the end of the movie:
You raise the blade
You make the change
You rearrange ’till i’m sane
After this is sung, the credits roll. Right as the credits start, the lines are:
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There’s someone in my head, but it’s not me.
Maybe this hints how luke’s character will be developed?
There is much more, but those are the ones i remember right now.
Add more in the comments!
Edit: Ok, if this is purposeful, it probably gives a big hint:
When rey says “Skywalker? :D”, Gilmour sings a lonely “Me…” that echoes for some seconds (The one in “Us and Them”) while the camera focuses on her face
“The lunatic is in my head”
The camera focus for the first time on R2D2, who has the rest of the map to luke stored on his memory
