Song of the Day: Preoccupations’, “Memory”

Today’s track of the day, “Memory,” is from the Canadian band Preoccupations, formally known as Viet Cong. This piece is off the band’s newest record, also titled, Preoccupations. Here the band conveys a much darker approach with some prominent, psychedelic synths, tight grooves, aggressive percussion, and dreary melodies-channeling a bit of Joy Divison and New Order. Considering the band’s notable influences, the group still provides a fresh post-punk sound that truly set them apart.

About Nicole Garcia (14 Articles)
Writer, pastry-eater, excellent car DJ, and Morrissey apologist. A sucker for a catchy melody, strong percussion, and some gritty guitars. Equally, an upright bass solo at a dimly lit jazz bar will set my soul ablaze. Some of my favorite albums range from Curtis Fuller's Bluesette, Radiohead's In Rainbows, and The Strokes' Is This It. I should add that I religiously listen to Billie Holiday every single time it rains. Though Jazz and Rock music varieties are my go-to genres, I try to be receptive to different sounds-- hence my unwavering love for Sam Cooke, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Serge Gainsbourg. On most days I run on caffeine, ice cream, and avocados. I’m also an amateur baker and wannabe French New Wave film connoisseur. When I'm not listening to music, I can be found taking pictures of my two dogs or thumbing through used book sections searching for Penguin classics. Cholula >Tapatio.
