SXSW in Austin, Texas is something us GATRS look forward to every year, that’s why this year we will be making a series of weekly posts for each of our must see artists. Each week, we’ll feature five, hand-picked artists that stand out to us individually, and appear on our must attend show lists.
Teri’s Must-See Artist of the Week: Ezra Furman
Coming from the diverse city of Chicago, IL, Ezra Furman is an alt/psychedelic rock artist with backing band called Ezra Furman & the Boy-Friends. The band formed in 2012 and have been touring non-stop since then. Furman released a groundbreaking album called Perpetual Motion People in July 2015 which made many people fall for him and the band. His influences come from ’50s and ’60s garage rock, and he really stays true to his roots. Listen to Restless Year below.
Naomi’s Must-See Artist of the Week: Hinds
Hinds are an all girl band from Madrid and are made up of Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass), and Amber Grimbergen (drums). This group of garage rockers have been everyone’s new favorite band with the release of their debut album Leave Me Alone. Their former name was Deers but had to be changed because of a similarly named band and is now Hinds, which means female deer. I quite honestly think Hinds is an even more unique name that pairs with their time-less sound. From influences of The Strokes, Black Lips, and The Vaccines, Hinds are a great listen. Check out the song Garden from their debut album below.
Krystal’s Must-See Artist of the Week: Har Mar Superstar
Sean Matthew Tillmann or better known as Har Mar Superstar is a R&B/pop singer-songwriter from Marshall, MN. Har Mar has no rules, sometimes showing up to gigs performing nearly nude, he is proud with his own appearance. His latest and absolutely infectious album Bye-Bye 17 is always fit for any listening occasion. Check out the song Prisoner featuring Fabrizio Moretti of The Strokes below.
Megan’s Must-See Artist of the Week: Julien Baker
Julien Baker is a singer-songwriter from Memphis, TN who is currently embarking on a new journey which is her solo career. When I first listened to Baker, it was instant love. I simply can’t stop playing her debut album, Sprained Ankle, that is filled with beautifully depressing songs. She has been the talk of the music industry since her album first dropped in October and it seems as if fans just can’t get enough of her. Finding out that she will be playing South by Southwest Music Festival instantly got me excited because I would finally get to see her talent live. Listen to one of my favorite tracks called Sprained Ankle below.
Molly’s Must-See Artist of the Week: The Family Rain
The Family Rain are an alternative rock band of brothers from Bath made up of William Walter (bass, vocals), Timothy Walter (drums, vocals), and Ollie Walter (guitar, vocals). The polished three-piece are currently unsigned but are still wow-ing people from all over the globe. With the release of What Are You Afraid Of? they have definitely gained a new load of fans because of its masterful and breathtaking sound. This band is certainly one to keep an eye on; they are on the verge of a major breakthrough. Listen to What Are You Afraid Of? below.
