The youthful trio from Liphook called Blaenavon have been on our radar for years, so when we saw that they were announced for SXSW 2016, we made it a major priority to see them live.
The band’s final SXSW show took place at Big Bang Bar on March 19, 2016, and it just so happened to be frontman Ben Gregory’s birthday as well. They kicked their set off with Hell Is My Head; a track packed full of riveting drums and thundering bass. The raw, catchy vocals alongside the electrifying guitar make it one of the greatest songs I’ve heard in a long time. With Ben’s cross-legged dancing to the masterful sounds that Blaenavon are known for, their stage presence was truly striking and unforgettable. The next four songs played were all new tracks from their forthcoming, debut album and to say the least, they were absolutely mind-blowing. They had the band’s signature sound with a twist that truly made you want to have a dance. Hearing the previews of the songs got us even more excited for the band’s debut; we know it’s going to be one of the best ever released. They closed with a track they’ve been playing for years: Prague. With cleverly written crescendos, soaring vocals, and earth shattering drums and bass; it’s the perfect song to leave a lasting impression.
Blaenavon certainly delivered on their live-performance and left the crowd wanting more. We highly encourage you to attend one of their shows if you ever get the chance to.
