On last night’s Daily Show, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino was not the musical guest but instead sat down with Trevor Noah so the two discussed sexism in the music industry and why she also spoke out after Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman accused former publicist Heathcliff Berru of sexual misconduct.
“Let’s be real, sexism and sexual harassment and this idea of women being sexually assaulted—it’s everywhere,” Cosentino asserted the importance of speaking out about sexual assault in the industry, especially as women. Adding, “I hope that there is one woman out there that is now standing up to her boss, or standing up to a man in the world that is making her feel less-than because she’s a woman.”
Cosentino also discusses a lot of “incredible men” that she gets to work with, shady people in the industry, as well as Nicki Minaj’s aesthetic and lyrics. Watch the video below.
In more recent news, Cosentino criticized Chris Brown’s single Back to Sleep, saying it “perpetuates rape culture.” You can read her powerful essay about it here.
I applaud Bethany Cosentino for speaking up and helping bring a voice to such an important topic. As women, we need a safe space and support to bring light to something serious as sexual harassment and no person (not just women) shouldn’t be afraid of speaking up. If for any reason, you think that sexism doesn’t exist… Then I would read the comment section of any article centered around women. Thank you, Bethany, for speaking out and please continue to be a boss ass bitch.
