Ashley reviews: Casa Loma’s ” This is Coping “

Nik Bruzzese, bassist and vocalist of New Jersey-based band Man Overboard, is getting ready to release the debut EP of his side project, Casa Loma on June 5th, 2020 via Pure Noise Records. His newest single “Olivia, Marley and the Duck Pond” was released on May 12th, 2020, giving us a tease of what’s to be expected on the EP called This Is Coping.

The EP is composed of 6 songs that are all on the edge of pure acoustic bliss. Compared to the typical style and sound of his band, Man Overboard, the tracks on this album steer slightly away from the usual emo-pop sounds of the band (despite the occasional acoustic style track).

Three of the songs we will see on this debut EP were released as singles earlier this year—“Travelers” and Famiglia” on April 22nd and “Olivia, Marley and the Duck Pond” on May 12th, in anticipation of the EP drop in June. Lucky for me, I got to get a little sneak peek of the whole thing, so let’s dive into my thoughts.

First off, something good to know about me: I LOVE acoustic songs—whether it be original songs or covers, I am here for it. I have a whole playlist I made with acoustic songs that I listen to on repeat on a regular basis just because they make me feel some kinda way. So, it is safe to say I am a fan of Nik’s side project here.

All songs are, for lack of a better word, simply beautiful. Nik’s warm and smooth vocals explore deep into emotions of loss, compassion and just general feeling. The acoustic style connects so well with the lyrics and vocals making it an excellent combination of sounds. Each song has an acoustic baseline but there are other musical aspects incorporated into them that sets them apart from any other slow acoustic song. Some include different vocal effects and the use of other instruments (like drums and piano). These different aspects give each song a little something extra that make them unique in their own ways.

If you’re into deep, perfectly produced acoustic songs that will make you feel something, Casa Loma’s EP is for you. Even if you don’t normally listen to that style, you still need to check it out–you will not be disappointed. Nik’s beautiful ass voice is enough to drag you in and melt you.

I do seriously recommend all of you to stream Casa Loma’s EP, This Is Coping, out via Pure Noise Records on June 5th, 2020. For now, please excuse me while I anxiously wait for the full EP drop so I can add each song to my acoustic playlist and listen to them every day until my ears bleed.
