Hertfordshire based artist BYFYN (AKA Ellie Isherwood) releases synth-pop single ‘Ain’t Gonna Be Lonely’ today, the latest in a line of exhilarating, textured electronic vignettes. Developing a sound that calls to mind Grimes, Robyn, Chvrches or Let’s Eat Grandma, she takes glossy synths and re-purposes them through a LoFi filter to create something wholly unique in tone. This is matched with a well-defined aesthetic to create a tangible world of her own.
Centered around a driving bass line and imperious drum machine beat, electronic notes percolate through ‘Ain’t Gonna Be Lonely’, building a dreamy soundscape on which BYFYN’s vocals deliver a self-directed wakeup call on the strains between co-dependence and loneliness. As she elaborates further:
“I had been going through a bit of a crisis of identity and I was struggling with anxiety. I began to realize just how co-dependent I had become on my boyfriend of 6 years. I hate being alone, I always have, but it had kind of reached a crisis point for me, where I was like, I’m in my mid-20s now, I need to examine what’s going on here, so I wrote this song as a start.”
