Washington DC’s indie-pop band Sub-Radio has premiered their newest single Cool exclusively with us today. Cool follows the dance-inspired hit Disco which was released in March, both singles are taken from their forthcoming EP Thoughts Lights Colors Sounds which will drop on May 22.
Cool is a heartfelt pop tune that highlights Adam Bradley’s exceptionally smooth vocals, and soaring harmonies that breathe life into the lyrics as they bounce over the background of soft electronic touches and thumping drums. The song is an instant classic and one that you will easily get lost in.
Can you tell us a bit about why you wrote “Cool” and what it’s meaning is?
“The amazing thing about growing up with Facebook is that I got to witness in real-time so many friends and acquaintances from high school grow up and be able to authentically be the queer or trans people that they are. And I wanted to write a song that captured my admiration for them and the life they managed to build despite so much negativity and hate when they were younger. And for all the kids right now who don’t necessarily see that bright future for themselves.” – Adam Bradley (Lead Singer)
This is your second release from your upcoming EP Thoughts Lights Colors Sound, Can you tell our readers why they should listen to it?
“Short answer: It’ll knock your socks off.
Long answer: this song is for anyone who has struggled with identity. If you’ve ever said to yourself “I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin”, we’ve been there. We want you to know that we see you, we are proud of you, and want to tell you how Cool you are.
We really believe there is something in Thoughts Lights Colors Sound for everyone. Cool is heartfelt and genuine while also very fun and engaging to listen to, and in that way, it’s quite a good representation of the EP overall. We can’t wait for you to listen to the whole thing.”Michael Pereira (Drummer)
What kinds of ups and downs if any did you run into while recording the new EP?
“Honestly the whole recording process was such a great experience for myself and the rest of the band. Our producer for 3 of the songs on the EP, Andrew Maury, was kind enough to host us at his house in New Jersey. We had a great time capturing the songs in an environment where everyone was super relaxed and collaborative. We’re all super proud of these songs and I feel like we’ve done them as well as they could be done! As an added bonus, I celebrated my birthday with Andrew and all of my bandmates. Definitely one of my favorites!
Immediately after that, we headed to Nashville to do “Cool” with Mike Kamerman of Smallpools. Smallpools is one of my favorite bands so it was a bit of a dream come true for me personally. Mike did an absolutely killer job on “Cool”. He completely changed one section of the song and breathed some new life into one we were already digging so much.
No real downs for me on the recording process. I’m just a little bummed we have to wait to play all these tunes for people in person!!” – Matt Prodanovich (Guitarist)
How are you all keeping busy during the quarantine? Have you been binging any good shows or reading books we might need to know about
“It’s always disappointing to cancel gigs and miss opportunities to play live, but we’re still hungry to perform and interact with our fans! To that end, the Sub-Radio boys have put our spare time and internet prowess to use in content creation!
– We’re reimagining SR songs both old and new, posting one to @subradioband’s IGTV and Tik Tok every week.
– We’ve created a Discord server to hang out and chat with fans, share quarantine stories, and host game nights! Feel free to join at https://discord.gg/QjSURrg
– The Sub-Radi-bros play the Super Smash franchise chronically and whenever possible, you can watch us play on Twitch @subradioband Tuesdays at 8:00 EST.” John Fengya (Keyboards)
“Did a lot of deep cleaning, practicing my grill-master technique, and playing a lot of music. I’ve been keeping in touch with my friends mostly through online games, thankful for cross-platform and discord. Honestly kind of ashamed to say I’ve been rewatching shows like Brooklyn 99 instead of discovering new ones.” Kyle Cochran (Guitarist)
Give us three songs to put on our Quarantine playlist…
“Three songs we’ve been digging!
Paradisin’ by Rina Sawayama
Get Your Wish by Porter Robinson
Kyoto by Phoebe Bridgers”– Barry Siford (Bass)
