They deliver a unique, sleek sound that equally takes its cues from the current crop of genre peers like Walk The Moon, Smallpools, CHVRCHES, and Cherry Pools, but also legendary acts like The Ronettes and The Beach Boys
Can you tell our readers a bit about the band?
We’re an Alternative Pop band living in LA born from everywhere else, started putting the early recordings together in Summer of 2014 and really kicked things into gear by winter of 2016. We all met in Hollywood through friends of friends playing in bands and going to shows.
Your single ” What They Call Life ” has been out a little over a month now, how has it been doing and is the release living up to your expectations?
I would say the release has far exceeded our expectations especially given the state of the world in the last few months. We’ve been grateful for all the support thus far in getting out music out to new listeners and it’s been a blast promoting!
Can you tell us the story behind the song?
We are telling a story about the human condition, how no one is ever really okay and how we’re all learning to cope in life. It’s about hope, clarity, the need to have a voice and I think most of all the promise having a legacy. I think the biggest fear in our hearts is being forgotten and even though nothing truly lasts forever it is impossible sometimes to comprehend. “What They Call a Life” is about having strength while you’re here in this life, keeping friends and family close and being present.
What was the most nerve-racking though you had in your mind the night before the single was released?
I have to say it’s been pretty easy going this time around with minimal stress but just like at the start of any release cycle I think we were all a little anxious to see how it would all come together and if anyone would really care. People really came together to rally behind this single so it’s been great all nerves aside.
Who would you say shaped the musical sound of the most?
Well that’s tough to say but we are the sum of all our influences. In my case I’d say anything from Stephen Jenkins to Brian Wilson and Elvis Presley and all of the above. I’d say in a more literal sense our producer Ethan Kaufmann shaped the sound the most but we all had our own thoughts about the music and have influenced it bit by bit along the way.
How would you describe your music to someone who had never heard it?
It’s likable pop alternative music with heart and soul. Or you could say something like we sound kinda like Walk The Moon and Group Love.
What do you want your listeners to take away from Paper Jackets?
Creative melodies that make you feel good, a fun listening experience and something you want to share with your best friends.
What have you been doing with yourselves during the lockdown? Any good books read or TV shows binged we need to know about?
We’ve been keeping ourselves busy with plenty of home projects, zoom jams and new learning experiences. I learned how to drive my dad’s old car which happens to be a manual transmission. I was starting to feel like one of those millennial types who couldn’t be bothered to learn something new so I rose to the challenge. To be honest it was pretty panic inducing stalling out in the middle of intersections while people went around me yelling “learn how to drive you idiot” .. I wanted to say “I’m trying!!” Definitely a rewarding experience to be able to drive it now.
What lessons do you hope humanity will learn from this pandemic?
Sadly I think it will be forgotten sooner than we think and even more concerning are these murder hornets I keep hearing about. In all seriousness I hope we can learn to be kind and understanding, learn to met people where they are and live life on life’s terms no our own. In the end I think we need to learn humility.
Name three essential Shelter In Place songs
Rocky Mountain Way – Joe Walsh or “Do you feel like We Do” by Peter Frampton (it’s just fun to jam it loud)
