As a fan of pop punk, I have spent years screaming such lyrics as ” Here I go, scream my lungs out and try to get you. You are my only one “ and ” If I could find you now things would get better we could leave this town and run forever ” along with William Ryan Key, frontman to one of my fave bands Yellowcard.
And maybe it is the ending of Vans Warped Tour, a right of passage for many pop-punk fans, that has me a bit nostalgic and listening to bands and songs that I haven’t listened to in years. Bands, like Yellowcard that I found on the pages of Alternative Press Magazine. As fans we’ve grown up, we’ve gotten jobs, we have moved on, and many times this shows in our music tastes.
This year William Ryan Key set out on a solo career with the release of his EP Thirteen. The EP which was released in May is five songs of some of the most unexpected music imaginable from a former pop-punk frontman. Showing that not only have us, listeners, grown, but so have our idols.
The single Old Friends reflects the nostalgia I am speaking of, it is fluid and beautiful and coupled with the newly released video that flashes us pictures of his past, you can’t help but feel you are in a dreamy memory of his as you listen and watch.
