The Girls At The Rock Show Exclusive: Interview with TWENTY2

The Girls at the Rock Show were given the opportunity to chat with Jon from TWENTY2. As we covered the band earlier last month with the release of nice knowin ya.

What inspired TWENTY2 to make music?
I got completely hooked on music at a very young age, like 4 or 5 years old. My uncle played electric guitar & I was fascinated by it. He would jam with me songs from Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Twisted Sister… I would just yell sounds over his guitars riffs, thinking I was singing. As far as Twenty2 goes, we were all friends who met through playing music, playing in different bands. Twenty2 first started as a side project for most of us & quickly became our main thing, but we had all been playing music for years prior.

How did you guys come up with the band name “TWENTY2”?
Our very first release in 1997 was under that name CATCH22. We did as much research as we could back then & as far as we knew, there was no other band by that name. Shortly after, the band you know as Catch22 came out with their album on Victory Records (I think) & we thought we needed to change our name as they were getting much more exposure than we were. So we just kept “22” but spelled it a little differently: Twenty2.

How did you all meet?
Nick (original drummer) & I played together in a band called ThirdFall. We played a bunch of shows with a band called Bugs Of Budsland, we became good friends with them & decided to start a side band with Couz (bass) & Simon (guitar). Twenty2 was a mix of the 2 bands: 2 members from ThirdFall, 2 members from Bugs Of Budsland.

What is your favorite city to visit when you’re on tour and why?
Trois-Rivieres, they were always the most fun to play. It’s there we get the best response & have the most fun.

What is your best memory from tour?
Doing the 123Punk tour with Rise Against, Mute & Belvedere & playing sold out shows every night. But the most fun was just being in the van with the guys. Everyone who’s played in this band are real nice & funny guys, so a lot of the time we spent in the van was hilarious.

Who is your favorite band to tour with and why?
I enjoy every time we play with friends. Recently, we’ve played a show / party with Bring The Light & The Lookout, both those bands have members or ex-members of Twenty2 & SUBB, who we’ve been friends with forever. That was a great evening.
Back in the day, we played many shows with Jughead’s Revenge – singer Joe D. produced our second release. All shows with those guys were great but that hasn’t happened in a while!

After a 10-year hiatus, what brought TWENTY2 back into the music scene?
We all continued playing music through the 10 year break, some projects still involving members of the band, so we’ve never lost contact. We tried to launch different projects through the years. At a point, it seemed more logical to do Twenty2 again. There was unfinished business there. Plus we had our record label, New School Records, behind us the whole time.

If you were stranded on an island and had to choose one album to listen to until your rescue, what album would you choose?

If you had to describe TWENTY2 to someone, what would you want them to know?
Energetic, angry, poppy punk rock fuelled by honesty. We’re somewhere between New Found Glory & Black Flag, if that makes any sense at all.

Any tour dates in the future?
I hope so. Things keep coming up & getting cancelled, so I really don’t know at this point. But we’re playing shows in Canada either way. Check our social medias: //
