Portland band Typhoon shares a video for their song “Evil Vibes”, taken from their politically-charged fifth studio album Sympathetic Magic which came out on January 22 through Roll Call Records.
“This is life now,” says the band’s frontman Kyle Morton. “You eat a slice of cake and maybe you enjoy it. An algorithm somewhere observes this and serves you another slice of cake. I like cake, you think, and you eat the second slice. It goes on like this for a long time – the cakes getting bigger, the frosting ever more elaborate. After a while, you start to feel sick, but all you’ve ever known is eating cake, and anyway, this restaurant doesn’t seem to serve anything else. So you just keep eating.”
Sympathetic Magic is the follow-up to the band’s critically-acclaimed fourth LP Offerings, and both records master the same brilliant storytelling. It’s their intricacy that has spotlit Typhoon as indie rock stalwarts. Offerings hit #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album Chart, as well as #34 Top Albums. Along with the previous album White Lighter, they received Best of The Year nods and praise from NPR, Paste, Uproxx, Stereogum, and more. This enabled the band to tour their, at times, 11-piece show, alongside The Decemberists, Portugal the Man, and Grouplove, selling out major clubs and venues across America.
In spite of the abundant thematic darkness, Sympathetic Magic is a sonically and creatively positive record. There’s genuine joy in Morton’s wordplay and Typhoon’s performance as they outdo themselves on an LP that will be remembered for years to come as an encapsulation of the spirit of our strange and unprecedented times.
Sympathetic Magic is out now on Roll Call Records and can be purchased exclusively at a selection of record shops with pre-orders available here.
